Fine Free Trial
The library will not be charging fines for overdue items until further notice. Patrons will not be able to check out any new items until overdue items are renewed or returned.
Account balances must be at or below $5.00 to check out items. Previous charges for overdue, lost, or damaged items must still be paid until your account is in good standing.
Returns & Overdue Fines
The Champaign County Library provides a drive-up window and materials return drop for the convenience of our patrons.
Any item put into the return drop after the library is closed, will be considered returned the following business day.
The Champaign County Library offers a one day grace period. Items renewed or returned within that grace day will not be charged a fine for that day. Any item returned after closing on the grace day, will be charged fines from the original due date. For example, if an item is due on Thursday and the item is returned on Friday during business hours, there will be no fine for that day. If that item is returned on Saturday, however, there will be a fine for Friday and Saturday.
Overdue fines for items excluding DVDs and electronic devices are $.10 per day with a maximum fine of $3.00 per adult item and $2.50 per juvenile item.
The overdue fine is $.50 per day per DVD with a maximum fine of $5.00 per item.
The overdue fine is $5.00 per day per electronic device.
Overdue charges will not accrue on days when the library is not open.
Patrons will be notified of overdue materials according to the following procedures:
- All patrons receive a written or email notice of overdue material, and due date two weeks after items were due.
- Two weeks after the first notice, the patron will receive a second notice about the overdue item.
- One month after the second notice, the patron will receive a billing notice that includes item replacement cost, all fines, and notification fees.
The Library may use any means, including law enforcement and court systems, to collect the amount owed for materials borrowed from the library collection.
If the cardholder is a minor under the age of eighteen, a parent or guardian will be the responsible party.
- There will be $.50 notification fee charge for each mailed notice.
Patrons having unpaid fines or delinquent materials may not check out any items until charges are $5.00 or less and materials are returned.
Damaged & Lost Items
There is no charge for normal wear and tear or minor damage that does not affect an item’s usefulness.
If an item is damaged beyond its use, the price from the item record will be charged to the patron’s account. After charges have been paid, patrons may keep damaged items.
If the patron believes an item has been returned, the library staff renew the item to allow patron more time to search. Staff will also search the library shelves. If the item is not found after several careful searches, the patron may choose from the following options:
- Request a “Claims Returned” status be placed on the item, excusing the patron from any fines and fees on that item. This may be done once.
- Assume payment for the cost of the item.
Patrons may choose to replace a lost or damaged item with a copy of the same title and edition if it is in a condition judged acceptable by library personnel. A $10 processing fee will be charged.
If an item is paid for and then later returned in good condition, a refund will be issued for the amount paid less a $5.00 processing fee. No refund will be issued for paperbacks or magazines.
Any check returned by the bank will incur a $25.00 service charge.
